The job market hasn\u2019t cooled as much and there\u2019s always speculation over what the latest monthly jobs report means for the Fed.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5D2E5C09-1315-E2D5-5674-7B799DBA5B7C@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The central bank will continue to pay close attention to the state of the labor market, specifically on wages, as it focuses on defeating inflation, but there\u2019s only so much that labor data can reveal about price increases.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_A862C60E-CE7E-64C8-C3AD-769EE0BA9C6C@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Mainly, it\u2019s that wage figures are great at gauging inflation\u2019s progress, but they\u2019re lousy at forecasting its future.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_B27A05DD-09BC-E0B3-22F5-769EE0BB69F9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Wages are \u201cnot a leading indicator of price inflation,\u201d Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee said in an interview with Bloomberg after the July jobs report showed that wage growth picked up. That same day, Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said that \u201cduring this whole high inflation period, worker wages have trailed inflation for quite some time and so we\u2019re still in that catch-up period and I expect that we will still see strong wages.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_2A6D6098-33B1-9CD9-6A59-769EE0BCE032@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Earlier this month, the August jobs report showed that wage growth eased and that the unemployment rate rose to 3.8%. Financial markets have shifted back to a \u201cbad news is good news\u201d way of perceiving economic data and will continue to react to labor data, but ultimately, it\u2019s the actual inflation data that matter most to the Fed.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_4C5D2462-8CF2-CCD9-0DEB-769EE0BC7367@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cThe (August jobs) report was decidedly positive for markets, however when all is said and done it will be the trajectory of inflation that will ultimately form the Fed\u2019s rate decision \u2013 inflation remains sticky,\u201d wrote Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist for LPL Financial, in an analyst note.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_4240662D-D045-50E4-589D-769EE0C20A63@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Fed officials have made it clear that the tight labor market has been playing some role in keeping inflation elevated, as they mull another rate hike later this year and there\u2019s a clear connection between labor costs and inflation because labor is the single biggest cost for many businesses, especially ones that provide services.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_C92FA7EC-E034-91FE-2B23-7B7AC3672E87@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      If a firm\u2019s labor costs are high because it has to offer higher wages to attract or retain talent, those costs could be passed onto consumers if productivity isn\u2019t keeping up with those labor costs.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5A2C0511-21F7-F970-20F2-76A5B61B51F2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The issue of labor figures in forecasting inflation lies with productivity data.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_BC223214-A699-20C5-3B9A-769EE0C3979F@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cHistorically wage growth that is not accompanied by productivity growth has been correlated with inflation, but the problem there is that productivity data are quarterly, so they\u2019re not as real time as monthly payrolls, and those numbers are subject to large revisions, especially lately,\u201d Agron Nicaj, US economist at MUFG, told CNN in an interview.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_A53FEAE6-6FE1-FF78-660B-7B7AE127F652@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cSo labor market data and wage growth can be useful at explaining inflation, but it\u2019s less useful at predicting it.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E88DD465-FAD2-395C-E53A-769EE0C4ED3D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      That means it\u2019s possible to have strong wage growth without it pushing up consumer prices \u2014 if it\u2019s tied with equally strong productivity growth.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_48390732-4F94-CD34-7E36-769EE0C52C5D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Goolsbee\u2019s solution? \u201cIf you want to know if you\u2019re beating inflation, go watch the inflation,\u201d he told Bloomberg last month.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_16DA0034-DD3E-76A6-50D4-769EE0CC41B1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The US dollar is enjoying its longest winning streak in nearly nine years.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_C4C43DF3-E17F-3C44-73A5-769EE0CDCA06@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The greenback was heading for its eighth-straight week of gains against a basket of other major currencies on Friday, its best run since winter 2014-2015. It has gained 5% since mid-July, my colleague Anna Cooban reports.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_FE7604D1-557A-6468-1861-769EE0CE147E@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The rally comes after months of volatility, fueled by concerns that the dollar may be losing its status as the world\u2019s reserve currency. Speculation about the potential de-dollarization of global trade rose again last month after the Chinese-led expansion of the BRICS group of nations to include major oil producers, such as Saudi Arabia.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_41E44F98-EEED-3C7E-83ED-769EE0D4132D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cRumors of the US dollar\u2019s demise continue to be greatly exaggerated,\u201d James Athey, investment director at Abrdn, a UK-based global investment company, told CNN.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_DF1A5106-3353-788F-3359-769EE0D501EB@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The US Dollar Index, which now stands at its highest level in six months, has been buoyed by a slew of positive economic data in recent weeks \u2014 fueling expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates higher for longer. The US Labor Department releases its Consumer Price Index for August.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_321F5F25-DF29-B08C-C87E-769EE0E0CCF1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      <strong>Thursday<\/strong>: Earnings from Adobe. The European Central Bank announces its latest monetary policy decision. The US Labor Department releases its Producer Price Index for August, along with the number of new application for jobless benefits for the week ended September 9. The US Commerce Department releases August figures on retail sales. China\u2019s National Bureau of Statistics releases August figures on industrial production, fixed asset investment, the country\u2019s unemployment rate and retail sales.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_7849FCC1-602E-1C10-8A28-769EE0E2234D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      <strong>Friday<\/strong>: Earnings from Lennar Homes. The Federal Reserve releases August data on industrial production. The US Labor Department reports export and import prices in August.
