{"id":56202,"date":"2025-05-06T14:50:44","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T14:50:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=56202"},"modified":"2025-05-06T14:51:23","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T14:51:23","slug":"friedrich-merz-wins-second-vote-to-become-germanys-chancellor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=56202","title":{"rendered":"Friedrich Merz wins second vote to become Germany\u2019s chancellor"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Stay informed with free updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description o3-type-body-base\"><span>Simply sign up to the <!-- -->German politics<!-- --> myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=48665ff1-b741-44dc-903e-2f54322a7127&amp;concept-id=0248d815-2074-4259-9848-806189cbecaa\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Friedrich Merz has won a second-round parliamentary vote to become Germany\u2019s chancellor after falling short earlier on Tuesday in a shock setback.<\/p>\n<p>The 69-year-old Christian Democrat, who won elections in February and has teamed up with the Social Democrats to form a majority government, had been expected to triumph in the first round. <\/p>\n<p>However, he secured a majority of the 630-member Bundestag only in his second attempt of the day, with 325 votes in a secret ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Merz responded to the vote with brief comments. \u201cThank you for your trust,\u201d he told the Bundestag. \u201cI accept the election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His initial failure to secure an absolute majority in the parliament was the first such defeat in the history of postwar Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The new chancellor won only 310 votes in the first ballot, even though the coalition partners have 328 seats between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s never happened before at the federal level,\u201d said Henning Meyer, professor at T\u00fcbingen university. \u201cClearly, there are disgruntled people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CDU leader has planned to immediately set to work tackling the deep problems in Europe\u2019s largest economy, which has suffered years of stagnation.<\/p>\n<p>Merz is due to travel to Paris on Wednesday to meet President Emmanuel Macron in what is intended to be a demonstration of his commitment to the Franco-German partnership.<\/p>\n<p>Holger Schmieding, chief economist at Berenberg bank, said Tuesday\u2019s initial upset \u201cshows that the coalition is not united, which could weaken his ability to pursue policies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Alice Weidel, co-leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany, had called for new elections after Merz\u2019s initial failure to secure a majority, arguing that it revealed the \u201cshakiness of the foundation\u201d of his prospective coalition.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\" data-component=\"image-set\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"2244\" height=\"1496\"><\/source><source media=\"(max-width: 490px)\"  width=\"1836\" height=\"1496\"><\/source><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption o3-editorial-typography-caption\"><span>Officials stand in the empty ceremonial hall in Berlin\u2019s Bellevue Palace after Friedrich Merz failed to reach majority in the first parliament vote as Germany\u2019s new chancellor on Tuesday<\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 John MacDougall\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Merz has angered some within the more conservative wing of his CDU\/CSU grouping by loosening the constitutional borrowing limit and embarking on a \u20ac1tn debt-fuelled spending programme to modernise the country\u2019s military and its ageing infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>German stocks recovered from their session lows, with the Dax index down 0.5 per cent by late afternoon trading.<\/p>\n<p>Lars Klingbeil, the Social Democrat co-leader who is due to take office as vice-chancellor and finance minister, has also faced internal criticism after his party suffered its worst electoral defeat with just 16 per cent of the votes in February.<\/p>\n<p><em>Additional reporting by Ian Smith in London<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This article has been amended to correct its account of the voting procedure for chancellor in subsequent rounds<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/48665ff1-b741-44dc-903e-2f54322a7127\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stay informed with free updates Simply sign up to the German politics myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.
