While headlines focused on the future of Berkshire, the lesson for everyday couples was quietly profound: even the most successful, stable households need their own succession strategy.<\/p>\n

We often associate succession planning with corporations. Shareholder meetings, leadership grooming, and boardroom readiness. But behind every home\u2019s front door is another kind of enterprise\u2014one that runs on routines, roles, and relationships. Call it what it is: a household business. And like any enterprise, it requires a thoughtful plan for what happens when one partner can no longer lead.<\/p>\n

From Boardroom to Living Room: Why Every Couple Needs a Plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Warren Buffett didn\u2019t just name a successor in a memo. For years, he brought Greg Abel into meetings, looped him into decisions, and integrated him into the firm\u2019s culture. Taxes were due. She\u2019d never filed them. Her husband had always handled the finances, the cars, even the quirky sump pump system in their basement. She didn\u2019t know where the documents were stored. They didn\u2019t have a financial advisor. There had never been a conversation about who did what\u2014or what would happen if one of them was gone.<\/p>\n

This story isn\u2019t rare. It\u2019s reality for millions of women and men across the country. Behind every strong couple is often one partner quietly maintaining a list of systems of everyday life. Until they\u2019re not.<\/p>\n

The Unspoken Roles That Keep a Household Running<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Most families don\u2019t have balance sheets or boards of directors, but that doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re not managing complex operations. One partner might oversee the finances, while the other tracks medical appointments or handles social logistics. Food does not miraculously appear in the kitchen by itself. Trash does not vaporize from the home. Even smart appliances need someone to do the laundry. Over time, these roles become invisible. Familiar. Even assumed.<\/p>\n

But when one half of a partnership becomes disabled or dies, that silent division of labor can unravel fast\u2014just when the surviving partner is at their most vulnerable.<\/p>\n

My colleagues at the MIT AgeLab have described what we refer to as Couples Succession Planning as a vital element of longevity planning.<\/p>\n

Couples Succession Planning for Two: A Four-Part Framework<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If it\u2019s good enough for the CEO of one of the world\u2019s largest companies, it\u2019s good enough for the rest of us. Just like corporate boards prepare for the day when leadership must change, couples can prepare, too.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a framework built around four key elements typically found in business succession\u2014Ownership, Governance, Transfer, and Management\u2014that couples can begin discussing today:<\/p>\n

  1. Ownership. Who is responsible for what?<\/strong>
    Catalog the routine, financial, logistical, and emotional responsibilities of the household. Who manages the bills? Who arranges travel or handles healthcare paperwork? Who is the go-to contact for contractors, doctors, or neighbors?<\/li>\n
  2. Governance. How are those responsibilities carried out?<\/strong>
    Where is information stored? Does the other partner know how to access it? Have both met with service providers like financial advisors, attorneys, or landscapers? Transparency is not just kind\u2014it\u2019s critical.<\/li>\n
  3. Transfer. Is there a plan for when roles must change hands?<\/strong>
    If one partner can no longer fulfill their responsibilities due to illness or death, is there a plan for transferring those tasks? Have you identified trusted third parties, whether family, friends, or professionals, to help?<\/li>\n
  4. Management. How will things evolve with time?<\/strong>
    As couples age, their physical and cognitive abilities may change. Has there been a conversation about how responsibilities will shift again in the future\u2014from the surviving spouse to adult children, professional services, or technology?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The Overlooked Reality of Women\u2019s Second Retirement<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    This isn\u2019t just about logistics\u2014it\u2019s about love and caring.<\/p>\n

    Women often marry older men. They also tend to outlive their partners. Yet far too many are unprepared for what I call in my earlier Forbes article their \u201csecond retirement\u201d\u2014the years spent alone, without a partner who once shouldered many of the responsibilities.<\/p>\n

    Some couples may assume that adult children will lend a hand. Perhaps. However, many couples do not have children. Even couples with adult children may be reluctant to rely on them, not wanting to be a burden or recognizing their child\u2019s busy life.<\/p>\n

    Even women with financial resources can find themselves unmoored, simply because no one ever talked about how things got done. Who did we trust? What passwords mattered? Which service provider always came through?<\/p>\n

    Succession planning isn\u2019t about expecting the worst. It\u2019s about preparing your partner for the future they\u2019re most likely to live.<\/p>\n

    Succession And Legacy Aren\u2019t Just About Money In Retirement<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Succession planning isn\u2019t just for the wealthy, the powerful, or the CEOs. It\u2019s for the everyday couple whose lives depend on each other in more ways than they may realize. It\u2019s for the surviving spouse who will one day wake up to grief\u2014and a long list of unfamiliar responsibilities.<\/p>\n

    Warren Buffett didn\u2019t just ensure continuity for Berkshire Hathaway. He modeled the kind of deliberate preparation that every couple needs and deserves.<\/p>\n
