{"id":56163,"date":"2025-05-01T14:11:05","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T14:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=56163"},"modified":"2025-05-01T14:11:06","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T14:11:06","slug":"mcdonalds-us-sales-drop-by-most-since-height-of-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=56163","title":{"rendered":"McDonald\u2019s US sales drop by most since height of pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=90c6bfe1-343c-405a-95a5-b3833716a990\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>McDonald\u2019s has posted the biggest drop in US sales since the height of the Covid-19 pandemic five years ago as uncertainty caused by Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs weighs heavily on consumer sentiment. <\/p>\n<p>Same-store sales in its home market fell by 3.6 per cent year on year in the quarter that ended in March, driven mainly by lower customer numbers, the world\u2019s biggest burger chain said as it released results on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>The fall in sales at restaurants open for at least a year came as consumer sentiment tumbled late in the quarter after the US president\u2019s levies shook markets and prompted worries among Americans about their employment prospects. <\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s chief executive, Chris Kempczinski, noted in a statement that \u201cconsumers today are grappling with uncertainty\u201d. Kempczinski later said in a call with analysts that \u201cgeopolitical tensions added to the uncertainty and dampened consumer sentiment more than we expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWe\u2019re not immune to the volatility in the industry or the pressures our consumers are facing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Analysts had expected a more modest 1.4 per cent fall in like-for-like sales at McDonald\u2019s roughly 14,000 US restaurants, according to Visible Alpha. The data marked the second quarter in a row for US comparable sales to decline, and it was the biggest since an 8.7 per cent plunge in mid-2020. <\/p>\n<p>US fast-food industry visits by low-income consumers dropped by nearly 10 per cent in the first quarter, according to Kempczinski. Traffic also fell at a similar pace among middle-income consumers, suggesting a broadening in economic concerns among Americans. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are being more judicious about cutting back on visits,\u201d Kempczinski said, adding that some customers were now making breakfast at home rather than eating at McDonald\u2019s. <\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s shares fell 2 per cent on Thursday. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\" data-component=\"image-set\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"3500\" height=\"2500\"><\/source><source media=\"(max-width: 490px)\"  width=\"1500\" height=\"2000\"><\/source><\/picture><\/figure>\n<p>The data follows weaker US quarterly sales at food and drinks establishments Starbucks and Chipotle Mexican Grill. By contrast, Yum Brands\u2019 Taco Bell US unit reported a 9 per cent increase in same-store sales. <\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s has continued to extend promotions such as a \u201c$5 meal deal\u201d introduced last summer as it looks to lure consumers into its restaurants. It has also rolled out limited-time offers such as the combo of Big Mac, fries, drink and collectible figures tied to the release of <em>A Minecraft Movie<\/em> this month. <\/p>\n<p>Global comparable sales declined 1 per cent year on year in the first quarter, with weakness in countries including the UK partly offset by stronger sales in markets including Japan and the Middle East. Excluding the extra day in the 2024 leap year, the global sales would have been unchanged in the quarter. <\/p>\n<p>Revenue fell 3 per cent to $5.96bn, missing the $6.12bn estimate in a Visible Alpha poll.
