{"id":56139,"date":"2025-04-28T13:45:30","date_gmt":"2025-04-28T13:45:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=56139"},"modified":"2025-04-28T13:45:32","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T13:45:32","slug":"spain-and-portugal-hit-by-huge-power-outage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=56139","title":{"rendered":"Spain and Portugal hit by huge power outage"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=d790af03-8681-432d-88c8-ed7e980fcf85\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Spain and parts of Portugal and France were hit by a huge power cut on Monday that paralysed transport networks and disrupted mobile communications, with authorities warning it could continue into the evening.<\/p>\n<p>Local media said authorities were studying whether a cyber attack had caused the outage, which halted trains, delayed flights and made traffic lights go dark.<\/p>\n<p>Data from the Spanish electricity operator showed that more than 10GW of demand was cut off when the blackout hit after noon local time, suggesting that it was one of the biggest in recent European history.<\/p>\n<p>The operator, Red El\u00e9ctrica, said it had activated plans to restore supply in co-operation with businesses in the sector. In a message on X, it said it was looking for the cause of the incident.<\/p>\n<p>It subsequently said that it had begun to recover voltage in the north and south of the peninsula, which it said was key to gradually recovering energy supply. But it cautioned that restoring full power would take between six and 10 hours. <\/p>\n<p>By mid-afternoon, all of the country\u2019s nuclear power stations remained offline, according to Montel, the energy data specialist, as they sought to respond to the disruption.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez held a crisis meeting with top government officials as local media reported that the Spanish national cyber security institute was investigating whether the outage was due to a cyber attack.<\/p>\n<p>The outage affected millions of people across Spain in cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, while Portuguese media reported that the country\u2019s grid operator said the cut had hit electricity supply across the Iberian peninsula as a whole.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\" data-component=\"image-set\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"5712\" height=\"3808\"><\/source><source media=\"(max-width: 490px)\"  width=\"3808\" height=\"3808\"><\/source><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption\"><span>Metro stations in Madrid were closed during the power outage<\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 Susana Vera\/Reuters<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Spain\u2019s chief traffic authority called on people not to drive their cars, because traffic lights were out of operation due to the cut.<\/p>\n<p>In Madrid, people spilled out on to the streets, as metro stations were evacuated and shops, restaurants and offices closed. Mobile phone coverage was also initially hit.<\/p>\n<p>Aena, which runs Madrid airport and 45 others across Spain, said it was relying on backup power supplies to operate and that flights were experiencing delays. <\/p>\n<p>The extent of the delays would depend on whether crews and passengers could get to the airports, it added. Renfe, Spain\u2019s main train operator, said all services had been suspended.<\/p>\n<p>Spain gets 43 per cent of its electricity from wind and solar power, but grid and storage capacity has not kept pace with the country\u2019s rapid development of renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>French grid operator RTE said parts of France had been briefly affected by the outage but that power had been quickly restored. <\/p>\n<p>It added that the Iberian peninsula\u2019s power grid was automatically disconnected from the main continental European network at 12.38pm but was reconnected an hour later.<\/p>\n<p>RTE said it did not know the origin of the outage but was attempting to support the Iberian peninsula in restoring\u00a0power. It believes the outage originated in the Iberian peninsula, not\u00a0in France.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Parts of the Spanish national grid\u2019s website were down on Monday.
