{"id":55108,"date":"2024-12-26T19:51:10","date_gmt":"2024-12-26T19:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=55108"},"modified":"2024-12-26T19:51:11","modified_gmt":"2024-12-26T19:51:11","slug":"indias-former-prime-minister-manmohan-singh-dies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=55108","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s former prime minister Manmohan Singh dies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=66ad6592-3764-443e-9298-e3fa30218e2d\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>India\u2019s former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who liberalised the economy and then led the country through a period of strong economic growth, has died. <\/p>\n<p>Singh, 92, was being treated for age-related medical conditions, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi said, as it announced his death on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The Oxford university-educated economist set India on a path to becoming a fast-growing economy as finance minister from 1991 to 1996, when he opened up the country to more foreign trade and private investment.<\/p>\n<p>Considered a political lightweight by some in India at that time, Singh was a surprise choice by the Congress party to be prime minister after it won parliamentary elections in 2004. <\/p>\n<p>Alongside a growth rate of almost 7 per cent, Singh\u2019s decade as premier was marred by allegations of widespread corruption against his party\u2019s leaders, although his personal integrity was rarely questioned.<\/p>\n<p>Singh was accused of inaction and opposition parties claimed he was subservient to Congress\u2019s chief at that time, Sonia Gandhi. <\/p>\n<p>Shortly before Congress lost elections to Narendra Modi\u2019s Bharatiya Janata party in 2014, Singh said in a speech to parliament that \u201chistory would be kinder to me than the contemporary media, or for that matter opposition parties\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Modi on Thursday described Singh as one of India\u2019s most distinguished leaders, saying he left a \u201cstrong imprint on our economic policy over the years\u201d and had \u201cmade extensive efforts to improve people\u2019s lives\u201d as premier. <\/p>\n<p>Rahul Gandhi, a senior member of the Congress party, paid tribute to Singh, saying he had lost a \u201cmentor and guide\u201d whose \u201chumility and deep understanding of economics inspired the nation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A member of parliament for more than three decades, Singh retired from active politics earlier this year. <\/p>\n<p>The mild-mannered Singh, who belonged to India\u2019s minority Sikh community, was born to a humble family in 1932 in a village in India\u2019s Punjab prior to the country\u2019s independence, which is now part of Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>Singh rose to become one of India\u2019s most successful economists, serving the government in various capacities, including as head of the country\u2019s central bank in the 1980s. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/66ad6592-3764-443e-9298-e3fa30218e2d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
