\n J. Larry Jameson, the University of Pennsylvania\u2019s newly installed interim president, called the past few weeks of turmoil a \u201cprofoundly painful chapter\u201d for the Ivy League school.\n <\/p>\n

\n Jameson, UPenn\u2019s longest-serving dean, was tapped Tuesday to replace Liz Magill on an interim basis after she stepped down over her controversial testimony last weekend.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe last few weeks have been a profoundly painful chapter for our institution, for higher education, and for the world,\u201d Jameson said in a\u00a0message\u00a0on Tuesday. \u201cI know these recent leadership transitions have been distressing and destabilizing. I feel it myself. There is pain, fear and uncertainty in our community.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Jameson stressed that \u201cevery person at Penn should feel safe and be secure in the knowledge that hate has no home here.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n UPenn\u2019s interim president called for the school community to come together and turn the page on the recent period of turmoil.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cAll of us \u2013 faculty, students, staff, alumni, caregivers, and the many friends of this University \u2013 can contribute to a new chapter in Penn\u2019s nearly 300-year history,\u201d Jameson said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Both of UPenn\u2019s leaders as of a few days ago \u2013 board chair Scott Bok and Magill \u2013\u00a0departed Saturday\u00a0just a week after Magill\u2019s\u00a0disastrous testimony\u00a0before Congress on antisemitism.\n <\/p>\n

\n Magill stepped down under immense pressure on Saturday after struggling to answer whether calls for genocide against Jews violates university rules. Magill will remain on Penn\u2019s faculty as a tenured professor at Penn Carey Law School.\n <\/p>\n

\n Criticism of Penn\u2019s response to antisemitism escalated even before Hamas\u2019 deadly Oct. 7 attack on Israel. Donors lashed out against administration in the wake of the\u00a0Palestine Writes literature festival\u00a0held at Penn in September, an event that the administration acknowledged features speakers who had made antisemitic statements in the past.\n <\/p>\n

\n As incidents of antisemitism rose on campus in recent months, Magill and the Penn administration struggled to respond to and put a stop to hate speech.\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
