{"id":54703,"date":"2023-12-13T03:57:49","date_gmt":"2023-12-13T03:57:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/business\/food-price-hikes-are-no-longer-outpacing-overall-inflation\/"},"modified":"2023-12-13T03:57:50","modified_gmt":"2023-12-13T03:57:50","slug":"food-price-hikes-are-no-longer-outpacing-overall-inflation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=54703","title":{"rendered":"Food price hikes are no longer outpacing overall inflation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2f3bgd000o64qf1r1sft7v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      For the first time since early last year, food prices aren\u2019t rising faster than overall inflation \u2014 although dining out remains a pricey endeavor.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2hbkz30007356hrzbb9yvl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The latest Consumer Price Index released Tuesday showed that food prices increased 2.9% for the year ended in November, coming in below the headline inflation rate of 3.1%, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2hgbnc000c356hhtdsffrv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      It\u2019s the first time since January 2022 that the food index did not outpace the overall CPI.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2hi3vf000e356hx3v93v8w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      You can thank grocery prices for that: They went up 0.1% from October to bring their annual inflation rate to a mere 1.7%, the lowest since June 2021.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2iviri000r356h5lgq2dhl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cThe acute pressure that was on the food supply chains has retreated,\u201d said Phil Powell, executive director of the Indiana Business Research Center and clinical associate professor of business economics and public policy at Indiana University.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2k0n32000t356haygegcjm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n       Food away from home, however, is rising at more than three times that pace. In November, that index accelerated 0.4% from October and 5.3% from the year before.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2k15tj000w356h69rc8gi1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Restaurant prices remain elevated because of the higher wages food service businesses have had to pay to retain workers, Powell said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2k2rxd000y356hzkp5s4wl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cThat\u2019s driven by labor costs and an unemployment rate that is still impressively below 4%,\u201d he said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2k39ut0010356h4sslnc2o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Inflation pressures may be easing elsewhere in the store, but one freezer case is full of items sending a particularly chilly price shock.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2kk9f40014356hfzfpadqv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Frozen non-carbonated juices and drinks are up 18.6% from last year. The tubes of frosty OJ have shot up in price because of bad weather (hurricanes, in particular) and a devastating citrus disease.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2l9c370016356hxf5qvfw1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Over in the butcher case, it\u2019s not looking much better: Beef and veal prices are up 8.7% annually, driven by uncooked beef roasts and uncooked beef steaks, which have seen prices rise 12.5% and 9.1% for the 12 months ended in November. Ground beef is up 7.2% annually.\n  <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/clq2mgy80001z356hqz7bgrdc@published\" class=\"image image__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-name=\"GettyImages-1249945084.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6665\" data-original-height=\"1333\" data-original-width=\"2000\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-1249945084.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"image__container \" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\">\n       <picture class=\"image__picture\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 960px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 480px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(max-width: 479px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2lk9gi0018356h7f3now1n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Recent bouts of extreme drought in the United States have resulted in a reduction of cattle herds, constricting beef supply.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2lnki4001a356h5jv2nkmj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Other categories where inflation remains high include baby food and formula (up 7.6%); sugar and sugar substitutes (up 6.8%); and crackers (up 6.5%).\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2lpggt001c356ho05ynqha@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Shoppers are finally catching a break on other items: Eggs, which saw prices spike 70.1% earlier this year, are now down 22.3% as supplies ramped up after a deadly avian flu.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2lytsh001e356hhylalb9h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Waldorf Salad lovers can also rejoice: For the 12 months ended in November, lettuce prices are down 10.2%, apples are 5.8% cheaper, and fresh fruits and vegetables are down 0.2%. (The BLS puts nuts into the broader \u201csnacks\u201d category, which is up 2% annually.)\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq2m9ce9001p356h836lyz4w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Potatoes saw the largest monthly increase among the food categories tracked in the CPI, rising 4.6% from October, according to data adjusted for seasonality.
