When exposed to liquid, they can expand to 100 times their initial size and weight, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2l000c3b6hwbm80ewb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Because they can grow inside the body once ingested, these toys pose immense health risks to young children, say experts.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2l000d3b6h3u0d7010@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      And, because they\u2019re mostly made up of water, typical X-rays often do not pick them up. In a safety alert in September, the CPSC reported that these beads \u201ccan cause severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration, intestinal blockages and life-threatening injuries\u201d and may require surgery to remove.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2k00023b6haq4elrqc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      They\u2019re sold as popular children\u2019s toys to promote counting or develop motor skills. But the water beads have drawn scrutiny from lawmakers and the CPSC.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2k00033b6hv0ntivnw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Last month, US Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. of New Jersey introduced legislation aimed at instating a national ban on beads marketed to kids.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2k00043b6hcr5gsi39@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cThey are specifically marketed to kids. In a single small package you can have 25, 50, or even 75 thousand of these beads and it just takes one to cause harm to a child,\u201d Pallone said in a November news conference. \u201cThey are not labeled as dangerous to small children, there\u2019s no warning, and they\u2019re not hard to get.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2k00053b6hef10l233@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the company updated its water bead policy on Tuesday. The e-retailer said it would remove listings for water beads if it refers to or includes images of children, or is described using toy, sensory play, arts or crafts.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2l00063b6hgb25qaqc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cIn the interest of safety, Amazon will no longer allow the sale of water beads that are marketed to children, including as toys, art supplies or for sensory play,\u201d a company spokesperson said. \u201cWe work hard to ensure the products offered in our store are safe, and we have teams dedicated to developing and updating our policies, evaluating listings, and continuously monitoring our store to prevent unsafe and noncompliant products from being listed.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2l00073b6haae6a92d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In a statement Tuesday, Target also said it\u00a0will no longer sell water beads marketed to children, in-store or online.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2l00083b6h6fyd93l1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Walmart, in an email sent Tuesday, said protecting customers is its top priority.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2l00093b6hq5f79ve3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cWe decided to voluntarily stop selling expanding water bead toy and craft items marketed to young children and have already taken steps to remove them from our stores and online,\u201d a spokesperson in an email.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2l000a3b6hm83p4lqm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Consumer Reports first reported the voluntary bans on Amazon and Walmart.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2l000b3b6h35vyjdk0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In the same November news conference in which Pallone introduced the legislation, CPSC Chairman Alex Hoehn-Saric said, \u201cIt is far too easy for beads to be lost, dropped, and a short time later a baby or small child ends up finding them, picking them up and ingesting them.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2l000e3b6hx0nkxldt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      CPSC urges parents and caregivers to remove products from the proximity of small children.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2l000f3b6h0k2t4gfc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Most recently, in September, Buffalo Games recalled \u201cChuckle &amp; Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kits\u201d sold exclusively at Target after one infant death was reported.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clq325t2l000g3b6hkyeb4gly@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      <em>\u2013 CNN\u2019s Eva Rothenberg contributed to this report.<\/em>\n  <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/12\/business\/amazon-walmart-target-water-beads\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amazon, Target and Walmart have voluntarily stopped selling water beads marketed for children after government officials, lawmakers and public health professionals called for a ban on the toys.
