\n GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham on Sunday called Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin \u201cnaive\u201d for believing further civilian casualties in Gaza could produce even more insurgents and said he has \u201clost all confidence\u201d in him.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cHe\u2019s so naive, I mean I just lost\u00a0all confidence in this guy,\u201d Graham told CNN\u2019s Dana Bash, adding later, \u201cThis is a radicalized\u00a0population.\u00a0I don\u2019t want to kill innocent\u00a0people, but Israel is fighting\u00a0not just Hamas, but the\u00a0infrastructure around Hamas.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum Saturday, Austin said he has \u201cpersonally pushed Israeli leaders to avoid civilian casualties, and to shun irresponsible rhetoric, and to prevent violence by settlers in the West Bank, and to dramatically expand access to humanitarian aid.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cYou see, in this kind of a fight, the center of gravity is the civilian population. And if you drive them into the arms of the enemy, you replace a tactical victory with a strategic defeat,\u201d Austin said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Graham, on \u201cState of the Union,\u201d disagreed: \u201cStrategic defeat would be inflaming the Palestinians? They\u2019re already inflamed. They are taught from the time they\u2019re born to hate the Jews and to kill them.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The South Carolina Republican said the retired Army general and former commander of US Central Command \u201cis telling Israel things that are impossible to achieve\u201d and called on Austin to \u201cquit criticizing Israel in public.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cSecretary Austin, the reason Palestinians are dying: Gaza is so condensed, Hamas has tunnels under apartments, under schools, under hospitals,\u201d Graham said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Israeli strikes on Gaza have killed at least\u00a015,207 people\u00a0and injured at least 40,652 others, Dr. Ashraf Al-Qudra, a spokesperson for the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health in Gaza, saidSaturday.\n <\/p>\n

\n He added that he understands the theory of what\u00a0retired\u00a0Gen. Stanley McChrystal has called \u201cinsurgent math,\u201d an idea that collateral civilian death in warfare can be a catalyst for creating insurgents,\u00a0but argued Gaza\u2019s population \u201chas been radicalized for decades.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIf we were attacked like this, which we were in 9\/11, if somebody called for us within two months to have a ceasefire against\u00a0al-Qaeda, we would\u2019ve laughed them out of town,\u201d he said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Graham also criticized Vice President Kamala Harris, who on Saturday during a news conference in Dubai said that \u201ctoo many innocent Palestinians have been killed\u201d as she met with the leaders of Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan during her trip to the COP28 climate summit.\n <\/p>\n

\n Graham questioned, \u201cWhat is too many people dying in World War II after Pearl Harbor?\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cVice President Harris, tell Israel how to destroy Hamas in a way not to hurt innocent Palestinians, and I\u2019ll pass it along,\u201d he said.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cNo Republican believes this, by the way,\u201d he added. \u201cNo Republican is telling Israel to change your military tactics.\u201d\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
