{"id":50730,"date":"2023-11-27T17:15:23","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T17:15:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/business\/google-to-begin-deleting-inactive-accounts-this-week\/"},"modified":"2023-11-27T17:15:24","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T17:15:24","slug":"google-to-begin-deleting-inactive-accounts-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=50730","title":{"rendered":"Google to begin deleting inactive accounts this week"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clph1oqpq000f3b6hyoi8m7ni@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      That Google account you haven\u2019t checked in years might be getting wiped this week.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clph2mfo300023b6hwt5nh371@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Beginning Friday, Google is moving ahead with its plan to delete accounts that have been inactive for at least two years.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clph1oqpr000g3b6hh2yi96a3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The company announced the new policy back in May, saying it\u2019s intended to prevent security risks: Internal findings show older accounts are more likely to rely on recycled passwords and less likely to employ up-to-date security measures like two-step-verification, making them far more vulnerable to issues like phishing, hacking and spam.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clph1oqpr000h3b6hppo4k7q3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Google has been sending warnings to affected users since August, with multiple alerts sent to impacted accounts and user-provided backup emails.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clph1oqpr000j3b6hl3wbb3tp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In a phased approach, the first accounts to be cut are those that were created and then never revisited by the user, Google\u00a0said in May.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clph1oqpr000k3b6hh4niuwq0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cWe want to protect your private information and prevent any unauthorized access to your account even if you\u2019re no longer using our services,\u201d Google wrote in an August policy update.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clph1oqpr000l3b6h510xue9x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Google accounts include everything from Gmail to Docs to Drive to Photos, meaning all content sitting across an inactive user\u2019s Google suite is at risk of erasure.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clph1oqpr000m3b6h42exnh8k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      There are a few exceptions to the deletion move: Accounts with YouTube channels, those with remaining balances on gift cards, those used to purchase a digital item like a book or movie, and those that have published apps that are active on a platform like the Google Play store, the company said in August.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clph1oqps000n3b6h86nxiixg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The decision to delete accounts goes a step further than an older policy.
