It\u2019s the strongest monthly spending gain since January; however, underlying data indicates this type of activity may be on borrowed time.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_64C9F460-D094-78F2-34E9-4BAC059FCC57@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The Personal Income and Outlays report for July also showed that the Federal Reserve\u2019s preferred inflation gauge remained high but grew at a monthly rate that\u2019s more in line with the central bank\u2019s 2% target.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_CB7126A1-7D92-5B32-2F41-4B7BF4F0891D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The Personal Consumption Expenditures index showed that prices increased 0.2% on a monthly basis and 3.3% annually.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_4235A43B-2677-8C8E-A01B-4B7CF2632DC4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      When stripping out the more volatile energy and food prices, the core PCE index showed prices increased 0.2% from the month before and 4.2% for the 12 months ended in July.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_A6A427A3-CCF1-714A-CBCA-4B7D97C52AC9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Economists were expecting monthly increases of 0.2% for the headline and core indexes and 3.3% and 4.2%, respectively, for the annual numbers.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_F4114D74-1DA2-BB99-DAB5-4BF3F65C1518@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cFor the [Fed], the best news from this release was the relatively large decline in the price index for goods even as goods consumption remained strong,\u201d Eugenio Alem\u00e1n, chief economist with Raymond James, wrote in a note. \u201cOn the flip side, consumption of services and the price paid for services, will remain the biggest concern for Fed policymakers.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5F4F2CF7-73A3-D2A3-6072-4BF5F5F80E61@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Goods inflation dropped for the third-consecutive month in July, falling 0.3%.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_98BA0365-6578-E568-6271-4BADBF48538E@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The higher annual readings for the PCE indexes can be attributed to \u201cbase effects,\u201d or comparisons to a period last year when inflation was cooling down after soaring to 40-year highs. This was similarly seen in the Consumer Price Index report for July, which saw upticks in annual inflation rates but a more moderate 0.2% monthly gain that\u2019s more consistent with where the Fed would like to see inflation.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_9BDB15A1-1506-F562-6D7F-4BF8591BC272@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cMake no mistake, the monthly sequential momentum around 0.2% is exactly what Fed policymakers are looking for to get inflation back toward the 2% target,\u201d Gregory Daco, chief economist with EY, wrote Thursday.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5283D401-1312-6B25-8A48-4BADF12E36F1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The 3.3% headline PCE inflation rate was largely expected after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell noted the data point in his economic outlook speech in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, last week. Core inflation, he said, remains well above the Fed\u2019s 2% target.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_7595EB15-529D-96D6-93C8-4BADF1318625@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cGetting inflation sustainably back down to 2% is expected to require a period of below-trend economic growth as well as some softening in labor market conditions,\u201d Powell said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_F7C08ECD-9423-596E-5175-4BAE333BB4CB@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The latest data underscores how the US consumer remains resilient and continues to drive economic growth. Even when adjusted for inflation, spending surged in July, rising by 0.6% from the month before.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_646C138C-29A1-5465-6198-4BDB94B2FFC9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The upswing aligned with other spending data released earlier this month that showed retail sales picked up by 0.7% in July from the month before, according to Commerce Department data that is adjusted for seasonality but not inflation. July retail sales were given a boost by Amazon\u2019s Prime Day, which contributed to a stronger-than-typical showing from \u201cnon-store\u201d retail sales for the month.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_31CFA27B-5026-39C0-047F-4BDF7B906B74@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Thursday\u2019s PCE data, which is a more comprehensive look at how consumers are buying across a wide array of goods and services, showed that spending was mostly broad-based \u2014 including on goods, a category that has been weaker for much of the past year. Nondurable purchases rose by the most in 10 months and durable goods and services grew by the fasted in six months, Wells Fargo economists wrote in a note issued Thursday.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_487EEA61-535A-E250-DBC9-4BE6E5ACD490@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      While on its face, the federal data seems to be at odds with the sales pullback reported by retailers like Home Depot (HD), Target (TGT) and others, it\u2019s possible that the gains seen are a result of \u201cnoise,\u201d or monthly volatility, in the data, Shannon Seery, economist with Wells Fargo, told CNN. Some consumers also may not yet be fully feeling the effects of high interest rates, she added.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_557A9E29-4613-17CB-790B-4BAFA314F90F@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      However, the foundation for that spending is showing some cracks.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_C9A6E482-2491-8F1E-ABD1-4BEAABDB4CE3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Personal incomes showed some weakness last month, growing by only 0.2% from June, which is the smallest monthly gain since January 2022. Unadjusted disposable incomes were flat, and when taking inflation into account turned negative by 0.2%.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_60CC6E08-D6B9-D8A9-0B46-4BB162098680@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The personal saving rate sank to 3.5% in July from 4.3% the month before, pushing savings to their lowest level since October 2022.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_4BFE4A8D-4EDD-4580-9D6C-4BD1EE105917@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cWhile the overall data keeps the heat on the Fed, I think the expectation is that spending will slow from here,\u201d Seery said. \u201cI think that the runway there is dwindling pretty quickly in terms of how much households can continue to rely on that liquidity.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_3908A10E-4997-ECF0-4268-4BF972521A5A@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Thursday\u2019s data is not expected to shake expectations that the Fed will pause at its next meeting, nor does it totally knock a potential mild recession out of the picture, she said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_BAED9592-C70C-13C0-1F30-4BFB03708D14@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Still, the biggest piece of economic data of the week is yet to come. On Friday morning, the Bureau of Labor Statistics is set to release the jobs report for August. Economists are expecting job growth to continue to slow, with employers having added 170,000 jobs this month and the unemployment rate holding steady at 3.5%, according to Refinitiv.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_78EBD9B3-8AAF-9981-D91B-4BFC03ECFEAE@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cThe latest evidence of slowing consumer spending, easing labor market tightness, cooling wage growth momentum and slowing core inflation reinforce our expectation that the Fed\u2019s tightening cycle is over, even if policymakers will keep the door open to further tightening,\u201d Daco said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_3F9C154C-E5F6-C5F3-DA2E-4C241B291ADC@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cChair Powell highlighted during his Jackson Hole speech that signs of above-trend growth or evidence that labor market tightness wasn\u2019t easing could warrant further tightening of monetary policy.
