To get it in your inbox, sign up for free <\/em><em>here<\/em><em>.<\/em>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloeltqr5004v47p0eza7273e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      A new CNN poll in the key early primary state of South Carolina<strong> <\/strong>confirms the findings in recent polls from other early primary states: Former President Donald Trump is the prohibitive leader in the Republican primary and there is no consensus alternative.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloemaskb000j3b6i34dn81xo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Trump has the support of 53% of likely voters in the South Carolina Republican primary, and his support is also more committed behind him than those supporting his Republican opponents.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloelzwcw00063b6idycvjye6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      For a candidate like Sen. Tim Scott, who does not even get to 10% support among likely Republican primary voters in his home state, one wonders how he can see a way to the top.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloem1si500093b6i06o4pj68@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      But it is a different question in the polling results that really caught my eye.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloem263e000b3b6ihjo4asnp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In the CNN poll conducted by SSRS, we asked likely South Carolina voters this:\n  <\/p>\n<aside data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/pull-quote\/instances\/cloem3dx9000f3b6ilwqwx1xn@published\" class=\"pull-quote\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    <svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-sig-quote-default\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M9.277 6l.536.937c-1.224 1.12-1.584 2.961-1.6 4.236v.016h3.569v7.781H4v-6.103l.006-.02C4.037 10.014 6.287 6.874 9.276 6zm9.079 0l.536.937c-1.224 1.12-1.584 2.961-1.6 4.236v.016h3.569v7.78h-7.782v-6.102l.006-.02c.031-2.833 2.281-5.973 5.27-6.847z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/p>\n<p class=\"pull-quote__text\" data-editable=\"text\">\n        As you may have heard, Donald Trump is facing criminal charges related to efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Please indicate whether you think, if true, those charges should disqualify Trump from the presidency, cast doubts on his fitness for the job, but are not disqualifying, or are not relevant to his fitness for the presidency.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"pull-quote__attribution\" data-editable=\"attribution\">\n            Question put to likely Republican primary voters in South Carolina\n        <\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloem8dyh000h3b6iyjgg1mfr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      A full two-thirds, 67%, of all likely Republican primary voters in South Carolina said Trump\u2019s efforts to overturn the election, if true, are not relevant to his fitness for the presidency.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloemijzy000l3b6ii8eku4yk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The figure pops up to 92% of the voters who currently back Trump. That\u2019s the vast majority of Trump supporters, at least in South Carolina at this moment.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloem2j92000d3b6ijqs5pfau@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      It is possible that among these particular primary voters in South Carolina, they are unwilling or incapable of<strong> <\/strong>entertaining a key part of the question \u2013 the stipulation that Trump\u2019s efforts to overturn the 2020 election is true.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloeqs6wm00093b6i0xobyhd4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      A national poll conducted for CNN by SSRS and released in September generated generally similar results.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloemoqhp000o3b6i9gfvxu5q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The ultimate implication is that Trump\u2019s supporters don\u2019t necessarily care if he tried to subvert the election and are, at best, ambivalent about the idea of democracy.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloemtlkz000s3b6ipxt5cppz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      With that in mind, take a look at this quote from the new House speaker, Rep. Mike Johnson \u2013 which the New Republic pulled from a sermon he gave at the First Baptist Church of<strong> <\/strong>Haughton, Louisiana, in 2019 \u2013 in which he argued for a sort of \u201cbiblically sanctioned government,\u201d one aspect of which is civil government, along with the family and the church. God-fearing people, he said, should fear democracy.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloemq341000q3b6i3x0ngg9a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cBy the way, the United States is not a democracy. Do you know what a democracy is? Two wolves and a sheep deciding what\u2019s for dinner. You don\u2019t want to be in a democracy. Majority rule: not always a good thing,\u201d he said, adding he thinks the nation\u2019s founders were \u201cdivinely inspired to set up a different thing.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloenism900113b6isfteg4hc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      It\u2019s an interesting lecture because it shows Johnson\u2019s worldview and his great concern that in the US, the civil government is too strong and \u201cgovernment is becoming God.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloenr27o00173b6ifagaef0y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Underneath Johnson\u2019s comment about democracy is a fear of the majority. He seems to be suggesting that<strong> <\/strong>good people, like him, who don\u2019t want to live under such circumstances are the sheep and the masses are the wolves.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloeneyjg000z3b6i6su3zrn0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Making the point that the US is not technically a democracy has been swirling around among Republicans for years. Back in 2020, frustrated at being isolated in the relatively early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenMikeLee\/status\/1314089207875371008?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">said something similar<\/a> to Johnson on the social media platform then known as Twitter.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloenocfq00133b6isz3yg30a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cDemocracy isn\u2019t the objective; liberty, peace, and prospefity (sic) are. We want the human condition to flourish. Rank democracy can thwart that,\u201d Lee wrote.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloent1bb00193b6i6b9hujhd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Lee and Johnson, although they don\u2019t want to talk about it now, were among the lawmakers on Capitol Hill actively trying to help Trump overturn the election before January 6, 2021.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloeo2ut6001f3b6iwmf17eit@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Another poll out last week plays into all of this. PRRI\u2019s 2023 American Values Survey asked Americans if they agreed that things in the country had gotten so off track that \u201cwe need a leader who is willing to break some rules if that\u2019s what it takes to set things right.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloeo8bde001h3b6idnfvf12l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Nearly half of Republicans, 48%, agreed with the idea, which is a foundation of authoritarianism, compared with 38% of independents and 29% of Democrats.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloeoa6cu001j3b6i0qehe8xz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      That survey also asked if because things have gotten so far off track, \u201ctrue American patriots may have to resort to violence in order to save our<strong> <\/strong>country.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloeobc1f001l3b6ic02d6c78@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      A third of Republicans agreed with that statement, compared with 22% of independents and 13% of Democrats.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloeo14v7001b3b6ioccq6ka7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Now apply this mindset to the next presidential<strong> <\/strong>election, in 2024, when it may very well be a rematch of Trump against Joe Biden.
