\n The messaging app Telegram has restricted access to several channels closely associated\u00a0with or operated\u00a0by Hamas, as the militant group\u2019s war with Israel rages on.\n <\/p>\n

\n One major channel with more than 700,000 followers and known to be\u00a0operated\u00a0by Hamas\u2019 military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, is\u00a0no longer accessible to Telegram users through the platform\u2019s iOS and Google Play Store apps, CNN confirmed Thursday.\n <\/p>\n

\n Another account known to represent\u00a0Hamas \u2014 which has more than 500,000 followers and recently posted videos from a spokesperson for the group as well as information about Israeli hostages Hamas has taken \u2014 had been restricted for users of Telegram\u2019s iOS app, but was still accessible on the Google Play\u00a0Store version of the app as of Thursday afternoon.\n <\/p>\n

\n The restrictions\u00a0mark\u00a0a significant clampdown on a major source of pro-Hamas propaganda since the Israel-Hamas war began, one that Telegram\u2019s error messages suggest may be driven by the app store operators\u2019 policies.\n <\/p>\n

\n Other popular Telegram channels that have expressed support for Hamas have also been restricted,\u00a0according to CNN\u2019s\u00a0analysis. It is unclear whether those channels may be directly affiliated with the group.\n <\/p>\n

\n Users of the Android version of the app who searched for the restricted groups received a notice saying:\u00a0\u201cUnfortunately, this channel can\u2019t be displayed on Telegram apps downloaded from the Google Play Store,\u201d CNN confirmed Thursday.\u00a0Telegram\u2019s iOS app labeled the restricted groups with a pop-up saying:\u00a0\u201cUnfortunately, this channel couldn\u2019t be displayed on your device.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The Android restrictions were earlier reported by\u00a0CNBC\u00a0and the state-owned Russian news agency\u00a0TASS.\n <\/p>\n

\n The restrictions come as Telegram has\u00a0taken heat\u00a0in recent weeks for allowing Hamas \u2014 a designated foreign terror organization in the United States \u2014 to continue operating\u00a0on the platform, although the group is banned on platforms owned by Meta and Google, as well as on X (formerly known as Twitter). Hamas has seen its following surge on Telegram since its October 7 terror attack on Israel, with some accounts growing to hundreds of thousands of followers.\n <\/p>\n

\n Extreme content that starts out on Telegram can quickly find its way to other, more mainstream platforms,\u00a0disinformation experts have\u00a0said.\n <\/p>\n

\n The\u00a0Telegram account belonging to the al-Qassam Brigades had, as of last week, seen its following triple on the app\u00a0before it became restricted. That account is among those no longer accessible via\u00a0Telegram apps downloaded from the Google Play\u00a0or Apple App stores, CNN confirmed.\n <\/p>\n

\n Telegram, a Dubai-based company founded by a Russian-born entrepreneur, has allowed Hamas to continue using the app despite\u00a0rising scrutiny of how social media platforms\u00a0broadly have handled the war, particularly by officials in Europe where terrorist speech is\u00a0largely\u00a0illegal.\n <\/p>\n

\n Asked whether Google pressured Telegram to act on the Hamas channels, a spokesperson for the tech giant said only that the company\u2019s app store policies require\u00a0developers to moderate content including speech that glorifies terrorism, and that Google takes appropriate action\u00a0when it finds violations of its policies.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe don\u2019t allow apps with content related to terrorism, such as content that promotes terrorist acts, incites violence, or celebrates terrorist attacks,\u201d Google\u2019s\u00a0publicly posted policies\u00a0say. Google\u2019s policies only affect apps downloaded through its own app store, meaning that versions of Telegram that may be available on third-party Android app stores are not subject to the same restrictions.\n <\/p>\n

\n An Apple spokesperson didn\u2019t\u00a0immediately\u00a0respond to CNN\u2019s questions about the Telegram\u00a0channels\u00a0now blocked for iOS users. Telegram also did not immediately\u00a0respond to a request for comment from CNN.\n <\/p>\n

\n Because of its very loose content moderation rules, Telegram has become popular among extremist groups internationally and among far-right groups in the United States, said Brian Fishman, the co-founder of trust and safety company Cinder, and former head of Meta\u2019s team that tackled terrorist and other dangerous organizations.\n <\/p>\n

\n The app\u2019s popularity in the US began to grow after the January 6 attack on the US Capitol when prominent peddlers of election conspiracy theories began using the platform after they were kicked off sites like Facebook and Twitter. Some 800 million people use Telegram globally,\u00a0its founder says.\n <\/p>\n
