{"id":31076,"date":"2023-10-17T22:54:42","date_gmt":"2023-10-17T22:54:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/markets\/dow-ekes-out-small-gain-as-stocks-end-mostly-lower-after-strong-u-s-retail-sales-data\/"},"modified":"2023-10-17T22:54:44","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T22:54:44","slug":"dow-ekes-out-small-gain-as-stocks-end-mostly-lower-after-strong-u-s-retail-sales-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=31076","title":{"rendered":"Dow ekes out small gain as stocks end mostly lower, after strong U.S. retail sales data"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002622581\" role=\"document\">\n<p>U.S. stocks ended flat to lower Tuesday as investors eyed strong consumer spending  data for September and third quarter earnings results, offset by a rise in Treasury yields after healthy economic data suggested the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates higher for longer. <\/p>\n<h2>How stocks traded <\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      The Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA<br \/>\n       rose 13.11 points or less than 0.1%, to end at 33997.65<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX<br \/>\n       fell 0.43 point, or less than 0.1%, to finish at 4373.20<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP<br \/>\n       declined 34.24 points, or 0.3% to 13,533.75<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 314 points, or 0.9%, to 33,985, the S&amp;P 500 increased 46 points, or 1.1%, to 4,374, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 161 points, or 1.2%, to 13,568.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>What drove markets<\/h2>\n<p>About 10% of the S&amp;P 500 index companies are due to report this week, and the majority of those who have already done so have beaten expectations on both earnings and revenues, according to Richard Hunter, head of markets at Interactive Investor.<\/p>\n<p>Results from JPMorgan Chase<br \/>\n        JPM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205971034\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.22%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Citigroup<br \/>\n        C,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207741460\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.61%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Wells Fargo<br \/>\n        WFC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203790192\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.79%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       were mostly well-received by traders on Friday. On Tuesday it was the turn of their peers, including Goldman Sachs<br \/>\n        GS,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209237603\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.60%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Bank of America<br \/>\n        BAC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200894270\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.33%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n        and BNY Mellon<br \/>\n        BK,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200171276\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+3.82%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       to release numbers. All three produced results beating Wall Street consensus.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson &amp; Johnson<br \/>\n        JNJ,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201724570\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.91%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Lockheed Martin<br \/>\n        LMT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200691238\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.16%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       also published results in the morning, while Omnicom<br \/>\n        OMC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209996569\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.68%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Interactive Brokers<br \/>\n        IBKR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208880397\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.61%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       are releasing reports after the closing bell. <\/p>\n<p>In data reported Tuesday morning, U.S. September retail sales were stronger than expected, raising the possibility of the Federal Reserve at least keeping interest rates higher for longer in its quest to lower inflation. <\/p>\n<p>Retail spending in September jumped 0.7%, beating forecasts. Stripping out auto sales, retail sales still popped 0.6% last month. Economists polled by the Wall Street Journal expected a 0.2% increase. <\/p>\n<p><strong>See<\/strong>: U.S. retail sales rise sharply due to strong car sales and higher gas prices<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumer spending shows little sign of flagging,\u201d said Robert\u00a0Frick, corporate economist at Navy Federal Credit Union. There may be signs of sagging credit card use and a switch to cash with more debit card use. \u201cAs long as the jobs market remains healthy, consumers should have the cash and confidence to maintain spending,\u201d Frick said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Treasury yields closed at 16- and 17-year highs on Tuesday. The 10-year Treasury note<br \/>\n        BX:TMUBMUSD10Y<br \/>\n       climbed 13.7 basis points to hit 4.846%, the highest close since 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Traders say there\u2019s a nearly 88% chance the Fed sticks with its current federal funds rate at its November meeting, according to the CME FedWatch Tool, though that\u2019s down from Monday, when traders wagered a nearly 95% chance of another pause on rates.<\/p>\n<p>Andres Garcia-Amaya, founder and CEO of Zoe Financial, said the strong retail sales are good news. \u201cIt\u2019s another indicator that a recession is not happening\u201d and is another data point for the soft-landing camp that thinks the Fed can pull off interest rate increases without an economic downturn. <\/p>\n<p>Even though retail sales exceeded expectations, Garcia-Amaya didn\u2019t see them as a \u201cblow-out.\u201d That\u2019s a good thing because too much would be too inflationary. So Tuesday\u2019s stock market noise connected to retail sales would lessen as investors turned back to earnings reports, he said.  <\/p>\n<p>Still, Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin said on Tuesday that the U.S. economy may be softer than the data suggest and this weakness may be helping to moderate inflation pressure. \u201cThere\u2019s a story \u2014 a plausible story \u2014 that weakening demand is already working to bring inflation down to 2%,\u201d Barkin said in a speech to the Real Estate Roundtable in Washington DC.<\/p>\n<p>While retail sales were strong in September and estimates of third quarter GDP are being revised higher, Barkin said that business contacts are telling him that demand \u201cis softening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other economic data points, U.S. home builder confidence fell to its lowest level since January. U.S. industrial output increased 0.3% in September, beating a forecasted 0.1% increase.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, investors kept an eye on geopolitical news with U.S. President Joe Biden due to visit Israel and neighboring countries in coming days to help calm nerves that the Israel-Hamas conflict will cause a greater conflagration in the region. In Washington DC, the U.S. House of Congress failed to elect a new Speaker. <\/p>\n<h2>Companies in focus<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      <strong>Bank of America Corp.<\/strong><br \/>\n        BAC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200894270\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.33%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       stock closed 2.3% higher Tuesday after it reported said a rise in clients and accounts across its business helped boost its third-quarter profit. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Johnson &amp; Johnson<\/strong>\u2019s<br \/>\n        JNJ,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201724570\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.91%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       stock fell 0.9% Tuesday, after the medtech and drug company posted better-than-expected third-quarter earnings and raised its profit guidance. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Lockheed Martin Corp<\/strong>.<br \/>\n        LMT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200691238\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.16%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rose 0.2% after the defense manufacturer said Tuesday it had net income of $1.7 billion, or $6.73 a share, in the third quarter, compared with income of $1.8 billion, or $6.71 a share, in the year-earlier period.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Goldman Sachs Group Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        GS,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209237603\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.60%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       stock ended 1.6% lower after reporting a lower third-quarter profit but managed to beat reduced earnings expectations on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2014-Jamie Chisholm contributed. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/s-p-500-futures-drift-as-goldman-sachs-and-bank-of-america-earnings-awaited-dfd86d7b?mod=markets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. stocks ended flat to lower Tuesday as investors eyed strong consumer spending data for September and third quarter earnings results, offset by a rise in Treasury yields after healthy economic data suggested the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates higher for longer.
