{"id":31072,"date":"2023-10-17T22:50:28","date_gmt":"2023-10-17T22:50:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/business\/pentagon-accuses-chinas-fighter-jets-of-coercive-acts-in-indo-pacific\/"},"modified":"2023-10-17T22:50:28","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T22:50:28","slug":"pentagon-accuses-chinas-fighter-jets-of-coercive-acts-in-indo-pacific","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=31072","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon accuses China\u2019s fighter jets of \u2018coercive\u2019 acts in Indo-Pacific"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Stay informed with free updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Simply sign up to the <!-- -->US-China relations<!-- --> myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=db50f6e3-93f6-4d1b-8d4f-19b17e43a410&amp;concept-id=403b154d-96c7-421b-b0b8-eb5fc2c3d198\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Chinese fighter jets conducted several hundred \u201crisky and coercive\u201d aerial intercepts against aircraft flown by America and its allies in the Indo-Pacific over the past two years, the US defence department said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Pentagon, Ely Ratner, the top Asia defence official, said the manoeuvres were not the acts of rogue pilots and instead a \u201ccentralised and concerted\u201d effort by the Chinese military to pressure the US and its allies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe People\u2019s Republic of China can and must end this behaviour,\u201d Ratner said. \u201cThe US will not be coerced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Admiral John Aquilino, the head of US Indo-Pacific command, said militaries around the world conducted routine intercepts every day but that the vast majority of those interactions were safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no reason for intercepts with the People\u2019s Republic of China to be any different,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Intercepts are the military description for when an aircraft from another military comes close to a plane, usually as part of a shadowing action, especially when the intercepted plane is near another country\u2019s airspace. <\/p>\n<p>Ratner said the Chinese jets undertook 180 dangerous manoeuvres against American aircraft and 100 against aircraft flown by allies and partners of the US. The Pentagon also released a batch of photographs and <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dimi\/status\/1714383278785064999?s=61\" data-trackable=\"link\">videos<\/a> to illustrate some of the actions that raise the odds of an accident in the air.<\/p>\n<p>Ratner said the manoeuvres included fighter jets releasing chaff, which could harm aircraft engines. In other cases, they have flown very close in front of an aircraft, forcing it to fly through the wake, a manoeuvre known as thumping. On one occasion, a Chinese fighter flew within 30 feet of a US aircraft for 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The claims come as US-China relations are the worst in four decades. The two countries are discussing the possibility of a summit between President Joe Biden and Xi Jinping if the Chinese leader attends the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in San Francisco next month.<\/p>\n<p>Military-military relations are in an even more perilous state. China closed several military-to-military channels last year after then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan. Aquilino said he had been requesting meetings with his two Chinese counterparts for more than two years to no avail.<\/p>\n<p>China refused an invitation in June for defence minister Li Shangfu to meet US defence secretary Lloyd Austin when they attended the Shangri-La Dialogue defence forum in Singapore. China refused a meeting because Li remains under sanctions imposed by the administration of Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>However, Li has not been seen in public for almost two months. The Financial Times reported last month that the US government believes that he has been relieved of his post and is being investigated for corruption.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese embassy in Washington said China had taken \u201cnecessary measures\u201d and told the Biden administration to stop \u201cspreading disinformation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUS military vessels and aircraft conduct frequent close-in reconnaissance on China, including 657 sorties last year in the South China Sea alone,\u201d said Liu Pengyu, the embassy spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>The US stresses that it flies in international airspace but Beijing objects because the American planes routinely gather intelligence on China.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/db50f6e3-93f6-4d1b-8d4f-19b17e43a410\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stay informed with free updates Simply sign up to the US-China relations myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.
