{"id":15132,"date":"2023-09-21T10:44:17","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T10:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/business\/india-suspends-visa-services-for-canadians-as-diplomatic-row-deepens\/"},"modified":"2023-09-21T10:44:17","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T10:44:17","slug":"india-suspends-visa-services-for-canadians-as-diplomatic-row-deepens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=15132","title":{"rendered":"India suspends visa services for Canadians as diplomatic row deepens"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Receive free Indian politics &amp; policy updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>We\u2019ll send you a <i>myFT Daily Digest<\/i> email rounding up the latest<!-- --> <!-- -->Indian politics &amp; policy<!-- --> news every morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=9f9a1c55-1079-43a3-973c-11443e660b70&amp;concept-id=92fd2c1e-c419-438d-bffe-ae09fd9ad815\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>India has stopped providing visas to Canadians until further notice, according to a leading visa service provider, in an apparent deepening of a dispute between the countries over the killing of a Canadian Sikh that has plunged relations to their lowest point in years. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to operational reasons, with effect from 21 September 2023, Indian visa services have been suspended until further notice,\u201d BLS, a company that provides outsourced visa services for Indian diplomatic missions, said on its website on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s external affairs ministry declined to comment, referring questions about visa issuance to a press briefing to be held in New Delhi later on Thursday afternoon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The dispute erupted this week when Canada\u2019s prime minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that the country\u2019s intelligence agencies were pursuing \u201ccredible allegations\u201d linking Indian \u201cagents\u201d to the killing of Canadian Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar and expelled a senior Indian diplomat. Nijjar was shot dead outside a Sikh <em>gurdwara<\/em>, or house of worship, in a Vancouver suburb by unknown assailants in June.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ottawa\u2019s airing of its suspicions of New Delhi\u2019s involvement in an extraterritorial killing created a furore in India and was firmly rejected by Narendra Modi\u2019s government, which described the allegations as \u201cabsurd and motivated\u201d and expelled a Canadian diplomat.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s government on Wednesday issued a warning for its citizens travelling to or within Canada, urging them to \u201cexercise utmost caution\u201d because of \u201cgrowing anti-India activities and politically condoned hate crimes and criminal violence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Before his death, India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist and sought his arrest in connection with several criminal cases. Nijjar had been working to organise an unofficial referendum among diaspora Sikhs on the creation of an independent state for the religious minority in the northern Indian province of Punjab, a notion New Delhi vehemently opposes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Canada is home to one of the world\u2019s largest Indian diaspora populations, with about 700,000 Indian citizens and another 1.6mn people of Indian descent, according to the High Commission of India in Ottawa. <\/p>\n<p>Bilateral trade in goods between the two countries amounted to $10.5bn last year. <\/p>\n<p>The Modi government has accused Canada of turning a blind eye to extremism and threats against its diplomatic premises and personnel.
