{"id":14627,"date":"2023-09-20T20:24:04","date_gmt":"2023-09-20T20:24:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/business\/republicans-accuse-merrick-garland-of-bias-in-hunter-biden-case\/"},"modified":"2023-09-20T20:24:04","modified_gmt":"2023-09-20T20:24:04","slug":"republicans-accuse-merrick-garland-of-bias-in-hunter-biden-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=14627","title":{"rendered":"Republicans accuse Merrick Garland of bias in Hunter Biden case"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Receive free US politics &amp; policy updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>We\u2019ll send you a <i>myFT Daily Digest<\/i> email rounding up the latest<!-- --> <!-- -->US politics &amp; policy<!-- --> news every morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=3d4cc7d2-7cb6-433e-85db-874e67206feb&amp;concept-id=6f7d5d90-ac15-41fe-9e31-e69b42a013c6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>US Republican lawmakers on Wednesday accused the justice department of political bias in a contentious hearing with attorney-general Merrick Garland that focused on the criminal case against Joe Biden\u2019s son. <\/p>\n<p>Jim Jordan, the House judiciary committee\u2019s Republican chair, said that by naming David Weiss \u2014 the US attorney in Delaware \u2014 as special counsel to oversee cases involving Hunter Biden, Garland had \u201cpicked the one guy he knows will protect Joe Biden\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Garland strongly disputed accusations of a biased Department of Justice, stating repeatedly that he had maintained his promise that Weiss has full authority over probes into Hunter Biden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur job is not to take orders from the president, from Congress, or from anyone else, about who or what to criminally investigate,\u201d Garland said. \u201cAs the president himself has said, and I reaffirm today: I am not the president\u2019s lawyer. I will also add I am not Congress\u2019s prosecutor. The justice department works for the American people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Republicans on the judiciary committee have been highly critical of the DoJ\u2019s handling of the case against Hunter Biden. A previous plea deal meant to resolve the case collapsed earlier this year, and last week Hunter Biden was indicted on federal gun charges. <\/p>\n<p>The committee\u2019s Republican members criticised Weiss for being too lax, and Jordan called the original plea deal \u201cridiculous\u201d and last week\u2019s indictment \u201cface-saving\u201d. The US attorney\u2019s office in Delaware did not immediately return a request for comment. <\/p>\n<p>The tense exchanges highlight the febrile environment in the US as the country gears up for presidential elections next year. Donald Trump, who faces four separate criminal cases at federal and state level, is the favourite to become the Republican presidential nominee. The former president has pleaded not guilty in all cases and has called the charges politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>The White House said in a statement that House Republicans had \u201ccranked up a circus of a hearing full of lies and disinformation with the sole goal of baselessly attacking President Biden and his family\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>The hearing comes just days after Kevin McCarthy, the Republican Speaker of the House, launched an impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden related to his son\u2019s business dealings. McCarthy has alleged the president \u201clied to the American people\u201d about his knowledge of Hunter Biden\u2019s business deals. The White House has repeatedly denied any allegations of wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>When discussing Weiss\u2019s appointment as special counsel, Republican congressman Tom McClintock asked if the move was because of \u201ccorruption or incompetence\u201d. Garland responded: \u201cThose are the kinds of questions that judges would rule out of order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jordan also addressed Trump\u2019s indictments, saying the DoJ had \u201cboth sides of the equation covered\u201d. Jack Smith, the special counsel appointed to oversee federal cases against Trump, has obtained two separate sets of criminal charges accusing the ex-president of mishandling classified documents and interfering in the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>Garland added that Smith \u2014 who has come under attack by Trump and other Republicans \u2014 had a \u201cnationwide reputation of integrity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic lawmakers accused Republicans of spreading conspiracy theories. Jerrold Nadler, the committee\u2019s most senior Democrat, \u201cimplore[d] the public to see through the sham\u201d.
