{"id":14432,"date":"2023-09-20T16:13:45","date_gmt":"2023-09-20T16:13:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/business\/india-warns-citizens-to-exercise-utmost-caution-when-travelling-to-canada\/"},"modified":"2023-09-20T16:13:45","modified_gmt":"2023-09-20T16:13:45","slug":"india-warns-citizens-to-exercise-utmost-caution-when-travelling-to-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=14432","title":{"rendered":"India warns citizens to \u2018exercise utmost caution\u2019 when travelling to Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Receive free Indian politics &amp; policy updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>We\u2019ll send you a <i>myFT Daily Digest<\/i> email rounding up the latest<!-- --> <!-- -->Indian politics &amp; policy<!-- --> news every morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=9b37b858-5387-493d-998a-e2e9f7095bbd&amp;concept-id=92fd2c1e-c419-438d-bffe-ae09fd9ad815\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>India on Wednesday warned its citizens to \u201cexercise utmost caution\u201d if travelling to Canada, amid a crisis in bilateral relations over the killing in June of a Canadian Sikh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s warning, which it said was prompted by Canada\u2019s \u201cdeteriorating security environment\u201d, came after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday there were credible allegations that Indian agents were involved in the murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.<\/p>\n<p>The US ambassador to India said on Wednesday that the allegations were \u201ctroubling\u201d, but also described New Delhi as a \u201cdear friend\u201d and warned against leaping to any judgment on Nijjar\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s government has rejected as absurd Canada\u2019s allegations of its possible involvement in the killing of Nijjar, a campaigner for the creation of an independent Sikh state who had been designated as a terrorist by New Delhi.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn view of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada, all Indian nationals, there and contemplating travel, are urged to exercise utmost caution,\u201d said India\u2019s ministry of external affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently, threats have particularly targeted Indian diplomats and sections of the Indian community who oppose the anti-India agenda,\u201d the ministry\u2019s advisory continued. \u201cIndian nationals are\u00a0therefore advised to avoid travelling to regions and potential venues in Canada that have seen such incidents.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused Canada of tolerating \u201canti-India activities\u201d by extremist exiles.\u00a0Indian officials have cited incidents including demonstrations held at diplomatic offices in Canada and images of a poster circulated online that read \u201cKill India\u201d and showed photographs of two Indian diplomats. <\/p>\n<p>New Delhi\u2019s warning appeared to be a response to updated travel advice for India issued by Canada on Monday, in which Ottawa called for \u201ca high degree of caution\u201d because of what it described as the \u201cthreat of terrorist attacks throughout the country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Canada on Monday expelled a senior Indian diplomat based in Ottawa, and India responded by expelling a Canadian diplomat from its high commission in New Delhi.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday Eric Garcetti, the US ambassador to India, described India as a \u201cdear friend, partner, ally (and) trading partner\u201d, but also voiced support for the principles of \u201csovereignty\u201d and \u201cnon-interference\u201d as Canada investigates Nijjar\u2019s death.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously any allegations like this should be troubling to anyone,\u201d Garcetti said at a panel discussion at the Ananta Aspen Centre, an Indian think-tank. \u201cBut with an active criminal investigation, I hope that we can make sure that the perpetrators are brought to justice and that we can allow the space for that information and that investigation to be heard before anybody leaps to judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The crisis in Canada\u2019s ties with the world\u2019s most populous democracy has resounded in a country with one of the world\u2019s largest Indian diaspora populations.
