It\u2019s part of a growing movement of US workers walking off the job.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_444C5743-C30B-133B-FCA3-942EE401C213@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      From Hollywood writers to nurses, factory workers, and Starbucks baristas, thousands of workers have gone on strike in recent months to demand higher pay and improved benefits and working conditions. The Teamsters union recently used the threat of a strike by 340,000 members at UPS to secure most of their demands, including pay raises and new air conditioned vans.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_D6140AB3-B7F0-DAFA-C2CA-94ECAD47BB9F@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Labor has become more aggressive because of decades of stagnant wages for lower and middle-income workers, while the richest Americans expanded their wealth to unprecedented levels. Corporate profits have soared since the pandemic, and workers want a greater piece of the profits.\n  <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/image-a4c546269f4c59c8f5c15e7f0511f99e@published\" class=\"image image__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-name=\"02 UPS workers Teamsters rally 0421 RESTRICTED\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6665\" data-original-height=\"1333\" data-original-width=\"2000\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/230615142308-02-ups-workers-teamsters-rally-0421-restricted.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"image__container \" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\">\n       <picture class=\"image__picture\"><source height=\"720\" width=\"1280\" media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"540\" width=\"960\" media=\"(min-width: 960px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"270\" width=\"480\" media=\"(-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio: 2)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5917DDB4-56E7-96D3-1047-95482F136E65@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cThere\u2019s a generational change taking place in the labor movement and its thinking,\u201d said Joseph McCartin, a labor historian at Georgetown University.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_B85B0850-8FAB-DCA4-3BA5-94ECB370F9C9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Between 1979 and 2022, the inflation-adjusted annual wages of the top 1% of workers rose by 145%, while the average annual wages of the bottom 90% rose by only 16% \u2014 about a tenth as fast, according to the Economic Policy Institute. Several factors contributed to these trends, including deregulation, the decline of unions, and little change in the federal minimum wage.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_F7EF5CBD-982F-3FFB-2305-94ECB370B3BC@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The auto workers, for example, are taking aim at CEO compensation at Ford, General Motors and Stellantis \u2014 which has grown by more than 40% over the last four years \u2014 to press their case for worker wage increases.\n  <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/image-c0badca1408f2a7f14f2fc00ceadb02c@published\" class=\"image image__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-name=\"UAW union line 0910 RESTRICTED\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6665\" data-original-height=\"1333\" data-original-width=\"2000\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/230914154041-uaw-union-line-0910-restricted.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"image__container \" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\">\n       <picture class=\"image__picture\"><source height=\"720\" width=\"1280\" media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"540\" width=\"960\" media=\"(min-width: 960px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"270\" width=\"480\" media=\"(-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio: 2)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/230914154041-uaw-union-line-0910-restricted.jpg\" alt=\"Members of the United Auto Workers union line up to enter a membership meeting in advance of the September 14 expiration of their union contract with Stellantis, Ford, and General Motors on September 10, 2023, Detroit, Michigan.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_62D554D9-88C7-B48B-6A63-94ECB370F743@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Workers also believe they have more bargaining power due to a tight labor market and the strongest public support for unions in decades.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_91127D58-81CD-F7B9-DC7F-95422539543A@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cWe\u2019re living through a strong labor market and economy, and workers and unions feel more leverage when economic forces are blowing in the direction they have been,\u201d McCartin said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_9A652D67-3D16-F60F-360C-950352109DE1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Workers gained power during the pandemic as Covid-19 cast a spotlight on essential workers\u2019 sacrifices and the vast disparities among America\u2019s workforce.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_0FA297F4-6828-BC16-18A8-94ECB37052C4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Unemployment is at a near-decades low and employers are posting more job openings than there are unemployed job seekers. The majority of the public sees unions as key to improving pay and working conditions. Unionized workers earn on average 10.2% more in wages than non-unionized peers.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_802A6547-58B8-F874-7699-950ACB672317@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cToday\u2019s striking workers may have a stronger hand in their negotiations than they would have had in the past given today\u2019s elevated public support for unions,\u201d Gallup said in a news release.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_821FC563-979E-7A27-B1C9-95BD3788789C@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      But despite the growing number of strikes, America still sees 70% fewer strikes now compared to the early 1970s, according to the Economic Policy Institute.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_3AF05BCF-BCEF-B7C9-D0CC-95BD3D14513C@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Union membership has also declined dramatically as some states placed barriers against unions through so-called \u201cright to work\u201d laws. Those laws allow workers to opt out of paying fees to a union at their workplace, even if they benefit from union bargaining agreements. Union membership has also declined as some companies have presented fierce opposition to unions. And unions have never organized workers at some companies such as car maker Tesla and steel maker Nucor that fend off unions by paying workers higher wages.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5870227C-A96C-E35B-414B-95BD3D171DE6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In a watershed moment in the decline of unions, 13,000 members of the federal air traffic controllers union walked off the job in 1981 and were fired by President Ronald Reagan and replaced. The labor confrontation had a chilling effect on unions. In 1985, 18% of the workforce was unionized.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_F96222AE-856C-366E-5874-95BD3D170668@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Last year, 10.1% of US workers were unionized.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_8DDBF1C6-5202-7B11-C6C2-95BD3D178E28@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cComing out of the Reagan era, union leaders were in retreat and looking to get along with management,\u201d McCartin said. Companies learned how to use strikes to weaken unions and they became less common.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_141B9443-801B-CAB2-771F-95BD3D17E721@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      But the labor movement has become more assertive.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_50D87B69-0349-FDED-F5CD-943130A653A5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      During the past year through September 13, unions launched 396 strikes across the United States, similar to the 409 recorded the year prior, according to a Cornell University Institute of Labor Relations database.\n  <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/image-352ffacdf9937c59cc4499fe7c38ed70@published\" class=\"image image__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-name=\"Mount Sinai nurse strike 0109\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6665\" data-original-height=\"1333\" data-original-width=\"2000\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/230915084805-mount-sinai-nurse-strike-0109.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"image__container \" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\">\n       <picture class=\"image__picture\"><source height=\"720\" width=\"1280\" media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"540\" width=\"960\" media=\"(min-width: 960px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"270\" width=\"480\" media=\"(-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio: 2)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/230915084805-mount-sinai-nurse-strike-0109.jpg\" alt=\"Nurses from Mount Sinai Hospital went in strike in New York this year. \" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_C9A6A651-1247-2D1A-FF10-942E25394771@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The number of workers involved in major work stoppages hit the highest levels in decades in the years before the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly in 2018 and 2019. After subsiding during the pandemic, the number of workers who went on strike grew by 50% in 2022, according to a report by the Economic Policy Institute.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5C7580AC-2637-1A95-2D9A-9558EACE3FE6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The election of UAW President Shawn Fain, a more combative leader than his predecessors who frequently blasts the \u201cbillionaire class,\u201d reflected this shift.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_482DDA42-06A0-93CC-3098-9559A5BB9CD6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Fain and UAW leadership are taking a different approach to negotiations with the three major US automakers. The UAW in previous contracts dating back to 2007 to 2009 gave significant concessions to automakers. At the time, years of losses and a global financial crisis had left the companies on their way to bankruptcy and federal bailouts.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_7139276F-8B3B-84E6-8105-9558EACE8CFF@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In past negotiations, the union has sometimes chosen only one automaker to strike, while staying on the job at the other two.
