{"id":12410,"date":"2023-09-16T07:34:33","date_gmt":"2023-09-16T07:34:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/business\/the-credit-will-go-to-modi-indias-pm-seeks-g20-boost-in-upcoming-elections\/"},"modified":"2023-09-16T07:34:33","modified_gmt":"2023-09-16T07:34:33","slug":"the-credit-will-go-to-modi-indias-pm-seeks-g20-boost-in-upcoming-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=12410","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The credit will go to Modi\u2019: India\u2019s PM seeks G20 boost in upcoming elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Receive free Indian election updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>We\u2019ll send you a <i>myFT Daily Digest<\/i> email rounding up the latest<!-- --> <!-- -->Indian election<!-- --> news every morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=50fa567a-5792-42ba-8255-14327a8878d5&amp;concept-id=1e78decc-c2d9-4ae4-ad99-35c90f445376\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and his party are seizing on a publicity boost from hosting the G20 summit last weekend to kick off a busy campaign season that will culminate with national polls early next year.<\/p>\n<p>The summit \u2014 in which Modi secured a unanimous statement that brought together Russia, China and the west, a series of economic deals and a flurry of photo-ops \u2014 provided the Bharatiya Janata party with an unparalleled platform to champion India\u2019s aspirations for global leadership and promote its prime minister as a foreign policy power player.<\/p>\n<p>Buoyed by the global spotlight, the party is now seeking to translate that momentum into electoral success, as Modi faces a unified and reinvigorated opposition in polls that will be fought largely on domestic and economic issues such as inflation.<\/p>\n<p>India is entering a busy political season, with five state polls due in the coming months and a national vote in early 2024, when Modi\u2019s BJP will seek a third term in power.<\/p>\n<p>For India\u2019s middle class, the summit has shown that \u201cglobally, we now have a standing\u201d, said political commentator Neerja Chowdhury. To them, the elevation of India, which this year overtook China as the world\u2019s most populous country and whose economy is among the world\u2019s fastest-growing, \u201cwill make a difference\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>No sooner had the G20 concluded on Sunday than the BJP began strategising. Modi and top BJP leaders convened a planning meeting on Wednesday on November polls in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where the ruling party is expected to face a strong challenge from its arch-rival Indian National Congress.<\/p>\n<p>The government has also called a surprise special parliamentary session next week, when in addition to debating several pieces of legislation it is due to celebrate the parliament\u2019s 75-year history.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"2240\" height=\"1493\"><\/source><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/https:\/\/d1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net\/production\/f9204afa-c9c1-4e12-a77c-e58c81f9add1.jpg\" alt=\"Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, right, and other world leaders visit the Mahatma Gandhi memorial in New Delhi\" data-image-type=\"image\" width=\"2240\" height=\"1493\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption\"><span>Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, right, and other world leaders visit the Mahatma Gandhi memorial in New Delhi on the sidelines of the G20 summit<\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 Ludovic Marin\/Pool\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>BJP leaders have in recent days promoted their G20 achievements in ways analysts said left little doubt about their upcoming pitch to voters.<\/p>\n<p>The summit \u201chas been presented as a personal achievement of Mr Modi\u201d, said Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, the author of a biography about the prime minister. \u201cThat is what will be played up by the BJP: that Modi has greatly enhanced India\u2019s prestige abroad and that Mr Modi\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009rubs shoulders with the world\u2019s most important people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since assuming the G20 presidency this year, India has held about 60 events in cities around the country, which the government said helped \u201cdemocratise\u201d an otherwise routine diplomatic event by spreading accompanying interest \u2014 and investment \u2014 to more remote areas.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition has argued that this strategy had more to do with exploiting a global platform to boost the personal image of the prime minister. Ahead of the event, New Delhi and other host cities were blanketed with images of Modi that often resembled campaign material.<\/p>\n<p>India had been due to host the G20 last year but swapped with intended 2023 host Indonesia in what critics speculated was a move meant to time its presidency with the run-up to next year\u2019s vote.<\/p>\n<p>Jairam Ramesh, a spokesperson for the opposition Congress, accused the ruling party of electioneering around the summit. \u201cThis is being done to divert people\u2019s attention from important issues,\u201d he wrote last month on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Modi\u2019s government even stoked controversy over whether it would seek to officially rename the country ahead of the polls after the prime minister opened the summit on Saturday sitting behind a sign that read \u201cBharat\u201d, a Hindi-language moniker for India long favoured by the party\u2019s Hindu nationalist supporters.<\/p>\n<p>Rajnath Singh, the defence minister, invoked that divisive debate on Monday when he said Modi \u201csuccessfully demonstrated Bharat\u2019s prowess\u201d at the G20.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"2288\" height=\"1525\"><\/source><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/https:\/\/d1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net\/production\/770f5976-372f-485a-a080-ab697f89cf3c.jpg\" alt=\"Police officers walk past posters with the picture of India\u2019s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the first day of the G20 summit in New Delhi on Saturday\" data-image-type=\"image\" width=\"2288\" height=\"1525\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption\"><span>Police officers walk past posters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi<\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 Francis Mascarenhas\/Reuters<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The BJP has shrugged off criticism of its conduct. Amit Shah, the home minister and Modi\u2019s de facto second-in-command, told an interviewer this year: \u201cIf the G20 summit is organised successfully\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009should the opposition get [the credit]? Obviously the credit will go to Modi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While most analysts expect the BJP will form India\u2019s next government, the party\u2019s path to retaining power is not assured.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of opposition parties including Congress in July formed an alliance \u2014 known by its acronym INDIA \u2014 that has focused attack lines on issues such as unemployment and Modi\u2019s alleged links with scandal-hit tycoon Gautam Adani.<\/p>\n<p>It is also negotiating a plan to unify behind individual candidates against the BJP in general election constituencies.
