{"id":11217,"date":"2023-09-13T14:33:30","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T14:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/business\/uks-keir-starmer-to-meet-emmanuel-macron-as-he-steps-up-global-charm-offensive\/"},"modified":"2023-09-13T14:33:30","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T14:33:30","slug":"uks-keir-starmer-to-meet-emmanuel-macron-as-he-steps-up-global-charm-offensive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prosfunds.com\/?p=11217","title":{"rendered":"UK\u2019s Keir Starmer to meet Emmanuel Macron as he steps up global charm offensive"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Receive free Labour Party UK updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>We\u2019ll send you a <i>myFT Daily Digest<\/i> email rounding up the latest<!-- --> <!-- -->Labour Party UK<!-- --> news every morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=af628073-93e7-4b58-82a4-67b0307eb02f&amp;concept-id=b3c3674e-3dc4-49d0-a26f-2a313c8d3399\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div data-attribute=\"article-content-body\">\n<p>Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is to embark on his biggest move yet on the world political stage, attending a gathering of centre-left leaders in Canada this weekend and meeting French president Emmanuel Macron next week.<\/p>\n<p>Starmer has been focused on domestic issues since taking the helm of the UK\u2019s main opposition party in 2020, but this month he will attempt to sharpen his foreign policy stance and burnish his credentials as a potential prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>Macron last weekend informed Rishi Sunak, UK prime minister, on the margins of the G20 summit in New Delhi that he would be meeting Starmer in Paris. <\/p>\n<p>While the French president has regularly met opposition leaders of countries with close ties to France, the meeting is a coup for Starmer. <\/p>\n<p>A Remainer in the Brexit referendum, Starmer hopes to refashion Britain\u2019s relationship with the EU if he wins the general election expected next year.<\/p>\n<p>Starmer\u2019s allies were also delighted that the meeting, expected to take place early next week, was in the works. \u201cIt\u2019s great news,\u201d said one.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the \u00c9lys\u00e9e Palace meeting, Starmer will attend a meeting of centre-left leaders and politicians in Montreal on Friday and Saturday, where he is expected to set out his foreign policy stance.<\/p>\n<p>Other attendees will include Justin Trudeau, Canada\u2019s prime minister, Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re, Norway\u2019s prime minister, and Jacinda Ardern, former prime minister of New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting has echoes of the \u201cThird Way\u201d conferences organised by Sir Tony Blair, former UK prime minister, and Bill Clinton, former US president, in the late 1990s. <\/p>\n<p>Blair, who on Wednesday told the Financial Times that Starmer would inherit a country \u201cin a mess\u201d if he won power, will also be at the Montreal meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Sunak met Macron in March at a bilateral summit that was characterised as something of a \u201cbromance\u201d between the two former bankers, both in their forties. The meeting resulted in a new agreement to help curb cross-Channel migration. <\/p>\n<p>The deal, under which the UK will pay France \u20ac541mn (\u00a3478mn) over three years, is part of a larger effort during the past year by both sides to rebuild relations after the tumultuous Brexit period, during which Macron and then prime minister Boris Johnson often clashed.<\/p>\n<p>The diplomatic and historic relationship between the two countries will also be on display next week when King Charles makes a three-day state visit to France, which will include a dinner at the Versailles palace and a speech in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Number 10 said on Wednesday of Macron\u2019s meeting with Starmer: \u201cIt\u2019s not unusual for opposition leaders to meet world leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the fact that Macron is rolling out the red carpet for Sunak\u2019s main electoral opponent will cause irritation in Conservative circles.<\/p>\n<p>One Tory official reflected that Ed Miliband, former Labour leader, met then French president Fran\u00e7ois Hollande in 2012. \u201cLook how that turned out,\u201d the official said, alluding to Miliband\u2019s loss in the 2015 election. <\/p>\n<p>Starmer\u2019s meeting with Macron next week is not his first with a major world leader; last year he met Olaf Scholz, German chancellor, who belongs to the Social Democrats, Labour\u2019s sister party.
